Treatment of School Refusal.

At Mid Island Psychology Associates, we take school refusal seriously as it can lead to higher rates of dropping out, social difficulties, academic difficulties, and an increased sense of anxiety that can be generalized to other situations. With the use of CBT and coming up with a plan for return to school for the client, and with the assistance of parents and the school district; most children are able to successfully return to school or an educational program. You may be wondering to yourself “How are these doctors goingto actually get my kid to go to school?” Each doctor takes a collaborative approach and gradually exposes the child to the school or the feared classroom, even accompanying thechild in the building and driving them to school and staying with them for a predetermined amount of time. Yes, that even means that we will pick them up at 7 in the morning to drive them to school when the time comes. Doctors also place importance on coming up with an appropriate educational plan and can help to navigate school meetings, such as determining 504 placement and Committee on Special Education (CSE) meetings. Our goal at Mid Island Psychology Associates is to return your child to an educational program as quickly as possible, while also taking into account the specific needs of each child.
