What is Psychological Assessment?

Psychological Assessment—also referred to as psychological testing—is a comprehensive evaluation of cognitive, academic, behavioral, and emotional functioning. These assessments help identify patterns of strengths and challenges, providing clarity on how an individual learns, processes information, and manages daily demands.

Assessments may be recommended when there are concerns related to attention, learning, behavior, social development, or emotional functioning. In other cases, families seek evaluations proactively to better understand a child’s profile, guide academic planning, or access appropriate supports.

Types of Evaluations We Offer

At Mid Island Psychology Associates, we provide comprehensive, individualized diagnostic evaluations, including:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Evaluations
Specialized, in-depth assessments using gold-standard tools (e.g., ADOS-2, ADI-R) to support accurate diagnosis and meaningful recommendations
  • ADHD Assessments
Evaluation of attention, executive functioning, and behavioral patterns to clarify diagnosis and guide treatment and school supports
  • Learning Disability Evaluations
Assessment of academic skills (reading, writing, math) to identify learning differences and inform educational planning
  • Emotional & Behavioral Assessments
Evaluation of anxiety, depression, mood, and behavioral concerns to support diagnostic clarity and treatment planning
  • Diagnostic Clarification for Complex Presentations
Comprehensive assessments for individuals with overlapping or unclear symptoms (e.g., ADHD vs. anxiety, ASD vs. OCD, FND-related presentations)
  • Gifted & Talented Testing
Evaluation of cognitive abilities and academic achievement for admission into accelerated or specialized programs

How Assessments Help

Psychological assessments provide clear, actionable insights that can be used to:

  • Support treatment planning and clinical care
  • Guide school accommodations (e.g., IEPs and 504 Plans)
  • Clarify diagnoses in complex or co-occurring conditions
  • Help parents and individuals better understand their strengths and needs

Our evaluations are thorough, collaborative, and tailored to each individual, with a focus on delivering practical recommendations that can be applied at home, in school, and in everyday life.
